It’s not every day that University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) faculty and staff can listen to a candid conversation on higher education between the institution’s leader and a UH System (UHS) Regent. On Sept. 8, members of the campus community did just that during the 2016 Fall Conversation on the state of the university.
In place of a traditional fall address, UHD Interim President Michael A. Olivas hosted UHS Regent and alumna Paula Mendoza for a public discussion on the university, its recent successes and upcoming goals. The Fall Conversation took place in UHD’s Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium before an audience of faculty, staff and dignitaries. Special guests included Max Castillo, former UHD president; Molly Woods, former UHD provost and professor emeritus; Welcome W. Wilson Sr., former chairman of the UHS Board of Regents, and UHS Student Regent Joshua Freed.
Mendoza opened the discussion by asking Olivas about his impressions of UHD and what surprised him the most upon his arrival.

Ten successful women in Houston have been named as the Class of 2016 for the Texas Executive Women (TEW)/Women on the Move award.
The women will be recognized at a November luncheon along with the 2016 winner of the group’s Rising Star award. “The judges worked hard to select ten amazing women for this year’s class,” said luncheon co-chair Shira Yoshor. “Every member of the 2016 group is outstanding.”
The Women on the Move annual recognition has been part of TEW since 1985. It was the brainchild of successful Houston businessman Robert Sakowitz and was started during a pivotal time in Houston. During that first year, Kathy Whitmire was serving as the first woman mayor of Houston; and other strong women were holding key positions around the city. All of them serving as examples to teenage girls, who to this day benefit from scholarships raised at the luncheon.

A trio of Mercedes Benz vehicles greeted “Age of Aquarius” Winter Ball 2016 arrivals, beginning with a white G-Class SUV (better known to car enthusiasts as the “G-wagon”) in the Hilton Americas-Houston valet line. Upstairs on the hotel’s second level, a sleek S-class convertible marked the check-in station where guests including Kristina Somerville, Valerie Dietrich, and Chita Johnson floated past. Across the hall, two shirtless mermen beckoned black-tie gala-goers into the main event.
